COMPANY-GRADE NCO & OFFICERS’ STUDY GUIDE

(Version 1, September 2009-2010)

 

Physical Training

 

  1. Know all commands for Extended Rectangular Formation
    1. Extend to the Left, March
    2. Arms Downward, Move
    3. Left, Face
    4. Extend to the Left, March
    5. Arms Downward, Move
    6. Right, Face
    7. From Front to Rear, Count Off
    8. Even Numbers to the Left, Uncover
    9. To resume normal platoon formation: Assemble to the Right, March.
  2. Conduct stretching exercises. Feet apart, use ten-count, unless stated otherwise.
    1. Neck Rotation (hands on hips, rotate head clockwise. . .and rotate. Count: one thousand ONE, one thousand TWO. . .to ONE-ZERO)
    2. Shoulder Stretch (place right hand between shoulder blades, pull elbow with left hand, and stretch.)
    3. Chest Stretch (hands together in front. Extend arms wide and count.)
    4. Hip Rotation (rotate hips with hands on hips)
    5. Knee Rotation (feet together, hands on knees, rotate)
    6. Sitting Ankle Rotation (sit, cross one leg over the other knee, hold that foot in your hand and rotate the ankle; change directions)
    7. Groin Stretch (sit, place soles of feet together in close to groin; hold toes and pull in toward groin)
    8. Quad Stretch (standing, raise one leg and hold foot with hand, pull upwards)
    9. Standing Hamstring Stretch (standing, place one foot forward, arms downward, palms forward, and stretch.)
  3. Cadet Challenge: know all 5 events.

 

DRILL & CEREMONY

 

  1. Individual Drill
    1. 15-count Manual of Arms (Right Shoulder, Left Shoulder, Port, Present, Port, Order Arms.)
    2. Saber Drill: Carry, Saber (Order, Arms); Present, Arms; Parade, Rest.
  2. Platoon Drill
    1. Prepare PLT for inspection: dress right, step off and verify each squad, make corrections; Ready, Front. Use proper side steps, plus face to left/right in marching.
    2. Conduct Platoon inspection. Inspect the leader, then proceed to 1st SL, down the squad, then between squads. At the end, march around the right side (SL side) of formation. Use proper side-steps to check cadets, inspect top to bottom. Face to Left/Right in Marching to move down the line. Inspect back of cadets as you move between squads—especially haircuts, pants length.
    3. Lead Inspector through your platoon. How to stay in front & use Face to Left/Right in Marching.

 

  1. Company Drill
    1. Form the Company. Know positions of PSG, PL, 1SG, C.O., each platoon and squad.
    2. Align the company. 5 paces by 1st SL of 2nd PLT.
    3. Mass formation: Company, Mass Left, March. 1st PLT stands fast, 2nd PLT Column Half-Left, March, Column Half-Right, March, Mark Time, Halt.
    4. Right / Left Turn, March. Understand who is the base person for each movement—everybody dresses on him/her.
    5. Pass in Review. Understand all procedures, to include Eyes, Right (right foot) and Ready, Front (left foot) at 6 paces before/after Reviewing Officer. Know actions of right-hand file (eyes front).

 

OTHER

 

  1. Operations Orders: know the 5-paragraph format.
    1. Para 1: Situation (a general background statement)
    2. Para 2: Mission (your unit’s task)
    3. Para 3: Execution (how you plan to accomplish the mission).

                                                               i.      Include Tasks to Subordinate Units if you are giving special parts of the mission to certain units, but not to others.

                                                             ii.      Include Coordinating Instructions if you have information to give to every cadet in your unit.

    1. Para 4: Service & Support (how you are arranging the logistical support of your unit. Anything to do with personnel, maintenance, transportation, supply, or other support belongs in this paragraph.)
    2. Para 5: Command & Signal (identify Chain of Command for this mission, i.e. the OIC or NCOIC, SLs, etc.)
  1. Board Procedures: how to report, answer questions, and departing the board.
  2. Cdt. Officer uniform: spacing, location of insignia on Class A, B, C, & headgear.
  3. Company organization & duties: all NCOs, officers, subordinate units & leaders. Also know what rank is authorized for each position.
  4. Military courtesy: know Greeting of the Day and forms of address for all ranks. PVT, PV2, PFC = “Private”; CPL = “Corporal”; SGT, SSG, SFC, MSG = “Sergeant”; 1SG = “First Sergeant”; SGM, CSM = “Sergeant Major.” 2LT, 1LT = “Lieutenant”; CPT = “Captain,” MAJ = “Major”; LTC, COL = “Colonel.” Remember, we normally say sir or ma’am to all officers, but must use the proper form of rank address if we are calling an officer by name.
  5. Cadet Creed is mandatory knowledge.
  6. Chain of Command: know the entire battalion Cmd & Staff. Know the following: Commander in Chief, SecDef, SecArmy, Army CoS, SMA, Cdt Cmd CG, Rgn Cdr, Bde Cdr, DAI, SAI, AI.
  7. And the you MUST have knowledge of the "Battalion Chain of Command & Staff.You MUST KNOW your C.O, X.O, C.S.M, S-1, S-2, S-3, S-4,    S-5, S-6
